Choosing to breastfeed your baby is a personal decision that new mothers have to face. Some mothers base their decision on whether their own mother decided to breastfeed, others base their decision on their culture ways, and some choose to breastfeed for its health benefits. Since this site focuses on losing pregnancy weight I wanted to post an article regarding the benefits of breastfeeding and its effect on weight loss.
I just wanted to make a quick aside. If you decide to breastfeed you will have to figure out for how long you are planning to breastfeed. Some mothers base this decision on medical reasons like myself. Personally, I only breastfed my daughter for 6 months at the advice of my doctor. Other mothers choose to breastfeed until they return to work when their schedule makes it difficult to breastfeed or pump. Breastfeeding until the baby starts teething is not uncommon. Finally, there are mothers who choose to breastfeed until their baby decides he or she wants to switch to baby food.
So the question asked the most is whether breastfeeding and weight loss are correlated. Does breastfeeding help you lose weight after pregnancy?

The internet is littered with articles on this topic. Many tell you that it does. A few tell you that it does not. Despite the unclear answer most of the information found will tell you the following:
  • Limit yourself to 1800 calories or less.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep up your milk production
  • Breastfeed for at least six months
I decided to do a little homework and research some medical journals that had a scientific approach to the question whether breastfeeding and weight loss go hand in hand. What I came to find out is that the benefits of breastfeeding on losing pregnancy weight are minimal. It varies among women and mostly depends on individual diet and exercise while breastfeeding.
My next question was to see if dieting had any effects on the quality or quantity of milk.  According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the quality and quantity of milk while nursing was not affected by going on a normal and healthy diet. They also found that some women were able to lose pregnancy weight on this balanced diet.
It is key to reinforce that a normal, balanced, and healthy diet are key. Don’t think about going on a crash or fad diet. This can result in toxins being released from our foods and our bodies into the breastmilk.
In conclusion, breastfeeding can help you to lose pregnancy weight by a few pounds but only when combined with a healthy diet. It is with a healthy diet and exercise that you will find the greatest benefit to losing pregnancy weight.
I will post another article where I will talk about the benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and the baby.
